Spring cleaning gets all the attention, but autumn deserves its own deep clean. Once the windows stay shut and the heat runs constantly, dust and humidity build up fast — so a thorough pass before the cold really sets in pays off all winter. Doing it on one of the season’s last sunny days makes the dirt easier to spot and the whole job more pleasant.
Start with a plan
Work room by room rather than tackling everything at once. A sensible order: the living room and kitchen first, since they see the most daily use, then bedrooms and closets, and finally bathrooms and the overlooked corners behind appliances.
Living room
- Wash removable sofa covers, and vacuum thoroughly under cushions and in seams.
- Launder curtains if the fabric allows, hanging them while still slightly damp to cut down on wrinkles.
- Take rugs outside to shake out or vacuum, treating any stains with a baking soda and water paste.
- Clean windows and sills with a vinegar-and-water solution, and dust shelves top to bottom so dust doesn’t resettle on surfaces you’ve already wiped.
Bedrooms and closets
Dust surfaces, move furniture to vacuum underneath, and use the season change as a reason to sort your wardrobe — wipe down shelves and drawers with a vinegar-and-lemon solution, wash summer clothes before packing them away, and set aside anything you no longer wear. Wash bedding and air out the mattress while you’re at it.
Kitchen
Empty cupboards and the pantry, toss anything expired, and wipe shelves with a natural vinegar-and-lemon mix that cuts grease without leaving chemical residue near your food
Bathroom and final touches
Finish with the bathroom — scrub tile grout, descale the showerhead, and wash bath mats and shower curtains, which trap moisture and odor more than people expect. It’s the kind of reset that makes the next few months of cooking, cleaning, and cozying up indoors noticeably easier.
