In some cases, hormone levels are completely normal, but the hair follicles are simply more sensitive to androgens.
This condition is called idiopathic hirsutism.
It can be influenced by:
- Genetics (family history)
- Ethnic background
- Natural skin and follicle sensitivity
In these cases, there is no underlying disease—just a natural variation in how the body responds to hormones.
Medications That Can Contribute
Certain medications may also increase facial or chin hair growth as a side effect, including:
- Anabolic steroids
- Minoxidil (used for hair growth)
- Some hormonal treatments
If hair growth starts after beginning a new medication, it is worth discussing with a healthcare provider.
